Jehovah Jireh – God, Our Provider (Shadows of the Messiah)

Genesis 22:14  And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh:  as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

In Genesis 22, Abraham found himself in a position nobody would want to be in.  God had asked him to take his only son Isaac to the land of Moriah and sacrifice him.  Isaac was not the only biological child of Abraham, but he was the only son that God was making His covenant with.

I wonder what must have been going through Abraham’s mind.  God was making a covenant with Isaac to bless him and any descendants he would have.  Now he was being asked to take his son, a young teen with no children, and sacrifice him to the Lord.   However, Abraham, with his great faith in God, believed that if God asked him to do this, then He would surely resurrect Isaac (Heb 11:19) .

Most of us know the story.  Just as Abraham was getting ready to sacrifice Isaac, the angel of the LORD called out to him, and told him not to do it.   A substitute was then offered; a ram was caught in the thicket nearby.  The ram was offered in Isaac’s place.   This is why Abraham called the place Jehovahjireh (“Jehovah sees”).

Moriah sits on a mountain at Jerusalem.  Moriah means “chosen by Jehovah”.   God Himself had specifically chosen this place for Abraham to offer Isaac.   This is the same mountain where God has chosen to write His Name.  (See Shadows of the Messiah – Where God’s Name is Written).

Mount Moriah also holds one more ‘secret’ that I didn’t see until recently.  Many years later, under Roman occupation, this same mountain was called Golgotha, where the ultimate provision was made for our sin.   God offered his only Son, Jesus, as the sacrifice.  We deserved to die, because the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23) .  But, Christ gave Himself as a substitute sacrifice that we may live.   That one act also gives us the ability to call the name of that place “Jehovahjireh”.  Jehovah saw us, and our need for a savior.  He took it upon Himself to provide that Savior.  The ‘wages’ of sin is death, which we deserved, but God ‘paid’ our wage with the death of Jesus.  Now we can live whole and free in Him, the God who provides!

The end of Genesis 22:14 says ‘it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.’ This mountain, first called Moriah, and then Golgotha, is the place God has chosen to show us His provision for sin.  When Abraham took Isaac to sacrifice him, it was an exact foreshadowing of God offering Jesus for us.   On this mountain, it will always be seen what God has done for us.   He is the great provider…Jehovah Jireh!
